Safety & What to Expect

Your safety — and your child’s safety — is the foundation everything at PathForgeXP is built on. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Your Guide

John Bishoff is a certified Wilderness First Responder who grew up in Moab, UT. He has over a decade of experience leading youth and families in backcountry settings as a BSA Scoutmaster, has guided groups on the Colorado River, and has taught mountain biking and skiing professionally. Every PathForgeXP experience is personally designed and led by John.

Group Size

Father-child retreats are capped at 5 pairs (10 people maximum). Men’s retreats are capped at 8 participants. Small groups mean personalized attention and faster response in any situation.

Emergency Preparedness

Every outing includes a comprehensive first aid kit and Wilderness First Responder-level medical supplies, a satellite communication device (inReach or equivalent) for areas without cell coverage, a pre-filed trip plan with local emergency services, and a detailed emergency action plan reviewed before departure.

Weather & Terrain

Moab’s desert environment requires respect. We monitor weather forecasts continuously, build flexibility into every itinerary, and have backup plans for every activity. We never push through unsafe conditions. Participants receive a detailed preparation guide covering desert-specific safety, hydration, sun protection, and what to expect from the terrain.

Age & Fitness Requirements

The Moab Journey is designed for children ages 8–17 with their fathers. Participants should be comfortable with moderate physical activity including hiking on uneven terrain, spending extended time outdoors in desert conditions, and carrying a daypack. No prior wilderness experience is required — we’ll prepare you.
